“GRIPA”, as a name ..
GRIPA is an acronym of GRIYA TAPA, meaning a house of solitude or a sanctuary.
As a music project, GRIPA was founded in 2000 by me with a help from Mariska Lelemboto and Febiola Lelemboto.
The project was initially named “GIBRALTAR”, but having found out that the name had already been previously designated
to an Indonesian metal band, we took time to sit together and thought of an alternative name for the project.
After hours of discussion, the name “GRIYA TAPA” was agreed since it had the closest fundamental meaning to depict the music project.
Since then, this music project exists under the name of “GRIPA”.
“GRIPA”, as an inspiration ..
The idea behind the name was not as sophisticated as it would appear to the people.
Generally people would do certain things in order to find an inspiration, in this case, an inspiration to create.
They may read from books or newspapers, watch television or movies, listen to music and perhaps more extreme behaviors
such as climbing a tree, getting drunk or any other indecent acts. As for GRIPA, the inspiration is my moment of solitude.
For me, the best time to create is to spend my time alone at the studio, in front of my computer and keyboard.
Off course the studio is not necessarily quiet. At times, my inspiration came after listening to several songs,
which do not have to be a particular type. I may listen to various kinds of music, from a very relaxing chill out and
jazz to an extremely gothic and heavy metal, in order to turn my mood on. Having said that, I think that the moment and
the place of solitude are the fundamental keys of GRIPA and thus I find the name “GRIPA” is the best way to describe
my source of inspiration.
“GRIPA”, as a philosophy ..
The philosophy of GRIPA is to create what I think is best and not to get influenced by the condition of the world or people.
In short, I am what I am. Some, if not most, musicians are trying to compose materials which are suitable to the market,
making them huge and successful hit songs, thus earning a great sum of money and royalty. Others, are disillusioned with
that idea or might have been fed up with the major label recording companies and decide to be “as far as possible” from
the market, the further the better. At first, GRIPA may seem more to the latter, but it is not true.
I never consider myself as a musician, so I always listen to all kinds of music, from the ones which are in top
charts at reputable radio stations or television networks to the ones produced by independent artists and not even
considered in top charts. I never judge whether a song is good or bad. I always try to find out why this song stays
in the number one chart for a long time and why another song, which I thought was good, never made it even to the top ten.
GRIPA tries to find balance between both, meaning that I want to make a good song and enjoyed by the people
without reducing my idealism to the materials I made. Some friends of mine still find them weird but others find them lovely.
Either way, I am happy enough to see that I have produced my own material and to have it listened by the people.
“GRIPA”, as music genre ..
GRIPA follows no particular music genre. As a creator of music, it is my dream since I was introduced to music
that I never want to personalize myself or GRIPA into one genre of music. This is because the inspiration always
comes in many kinds. At times, I felt that it would be great if the music is made with distorted guitar sounds or
maybe an ethnic vocal. I think this is what makes music an art. It comes from many forms and can be translated into
many ways, too and I think it is good to combine the necessary parts and to produce a, hopefully, wonderful material.
“GRIPA” as an evolution ..
I never followed a particular way of music and I always inspired by various kinds of events.
Having said that, my way of creating music changes from time to time. The change may be slow and sometimes unnoticeable,
but I always think GRIPA as, one or another, a learning facility, in musical sense. Since GRIPA is a very dynamic
music project and it walks correspondingly with technology and complexity of the world, the songs of GRIPA will vary as well.
Whether they may be an improvement from the previous ones or a deviation or even a step back, I will let
the people decide on that case as I know their opinions will vary too.
